The new Samsung Galaxy A8+ came out in January 2018. It has advanced qualities compared to previous flagship models like Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8. The key features include FRT (face recognition technology), Bixby Voice Assistant and the Infinity display panel. The Samsung Galaxy A8+ can prove to be a tough competitor to OnePlus 5T, Nokia 8 and Honor View 10 mobile sets.
6” Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 1080 X 2220 pixel resolution (411 ppi density) and 18:5.9 aspect ratio, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The display shows decent viewing angles and accurate colour reproduction levels. Brightness levels hold well in sunshine.
Android Nougat v.7.1.1, powered by a Samsung Exynos 7885 SoC Octa-Core ( 2 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz and 6 cores at 1.6 GHz) CPU chipset and Mali-G71 GPU. Exynos is the best mid-range processor from Samsung yet. 6 GB RAM allows you to run multiple simultaneous programmes untroubled on your smartphone.
There are 2 variants: The 64 GB storage comes with 6 GB RAM while 32 GB comes with 4 GB RAM. Internal storage can be expanded up to a max 256 GB with the microSD card slot.
The rear camera is a 16 MP, f/1.7 aperture lens with phase detection Autofocus and LED flash. Photos taken even in low light seem decent. It has features like Digital Zoom, Touch Focus, Face Detection, Geo-tagging, ,Panorama and HDR. The rear camera can shoot videos at resolution 1080p @30 fps.
The front camera(s) present better selfies/groupfies with Dual Front Camera having 16 MP + 8 MP f/1.9 aperture lens–featured first time in a Samsung smartphone. The face recognition technology is quite fine and it can recognize faces even in low light. You can shoot 1080p videos with the front camera, having Face Detection, Panorama and HDR options available with it.
The A8+ runs on a 3500 mAh Li-Ion battery which is non-removable (unfortunately this creates problems when faced with charging anomalies or booting problems or any other situation where the battery must be replaced).
The fingerprint magnet sensor is right below the rear camera and works quite well. A few other standard sensors that are a must in latest smartphones are also present, such as proximity sensor, accelerometer, gyrometer, compass and barometer.
It is Wi-Fi enabled with Hotspot option. The Wi-Fi is dual band type. A8+ is a dual SIM smartphone with both 3G and 4G capabilities. Enjoy FM Radio with typical 3.5 mm headphone jack with in-built active noise cancellation dedicated microphone. Also present is USB 2.0 Type C 1.0 reversible connector.
Some Useful Extras
The custom UI has shortcut tools like Hold Palm (which lets you take a snap by holding palm in front of the camera for a few seconds), One-Handed-Mode and additional Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneDrive and LinkedIn.
Overall the newly launched Samsung A8+ is a very novel piece of gadget and seems worthy to have in possession of. If you are looking for some spot-on tech within a modest budget, this is it.
